The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) will install a new S-band dual-polarised Doppler radar at Tennant Creek Airport, replacing the radar decommissioned in 2015. The project, jointly funded by the NT and Commonwealth governments, will provide accurate weather forecasting for Tennant Creek, surrounding Aboriginal communities, and cattle stations across the Barkly. BOM CEO Stuart Minchin said delays were caused by site selection errors and COVID-19 restrictions, but new technology now allows for a taller tower at the airport site. Locals, including pastoralist Amber Driver, welcomed the announcement but criticized the long wait, noting the region has faced floods and fires without radar coverage. The radar will have a 300 km range and is expected to be operational by mid-2027.
