A proposal has been submitted to build a six-storey specialist cancer treatment centre behind Wollongong Hospital in Wollongong. The development, planned for Loftus Street within the Wollongong health precinct, would provide specialist oncology services including radiation therapy, medical suites, a pharmacy and café, along with three underground parking levels containing 59 spaces. Planning documents lodged through the NSW Government’s State Significant Development process state the facility is intended to reduce the need for Illawarra and South Coast patients to travel to Sydney for cancer treatment. The centre would also include a high-performance linear accelerator (LINAC) for precision radiation therapy. The proposal would require demolition of two existing properties at 20–22 Loftus Street, currently occupied by a cardiology practice and a residence. The project aligns with the broader 25-year Wollongong Health Precinct strategy, which aims to expand medical infrastructure around both public and private hospital services in the city. It comes shortly after separate expansion plans were lodged for Wollongong Private Hospital, including new emergency, oncology and accommodation facilities.
