Residents and businesses across the Sunshine Coast are being invited to have their say on a significant proposal that could reshape the map of one of Australia’s largest masterplanned communities. The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development has officially opened public consultation regarding the establishment of a new locality to be known as Aura Central. The proposal involves a boundary amendment that would see approximately 90 hectares of land transferred from the existing locality of Bells Creek into the newly proposed Aura Central. This area is situated within the Caloundra South Priority Development Area, widely known as Aura. As a long-term urban growth project, Aura is projected to house approximately 50,000 residents upon its completion. Government officials have emphasised that this boundary adjustment is more than a simple naming exercise. Accurate locality boundaries and addressing systems are fundamental to the efficient operation of essential services, including emergency response, postal deliveries, and navigation systems. Police, ambulance, and fire services rely heavily on precise address data to ensure timely responses during critical incidents. Should the proposal be approved, residents and businesses within the affected area would be required to update their official address details. Authorities have confirmed that any impacted property owners or occupants would receive direct notification outlining the necessary steps to update their records. The primary objective of the proposal is to formally recognise the emerging city centre within the broader Aura development. The proposed Aura Central locality would encompass the growing commercial hub, including the future Aura Town Centre. This centre is set to become a vital retail and commercial anchor for the region, with the first stage spanning approximately 16,300 square metres. Plans for this precinct include major supermarkets, specialty retailers, dining options, and commercial spaces. Additionally, the proposed locality would incorporate the Aura Parklands, a significant public open space covering more than five hectares. The wider city centre vision includes further commercial buildings, educational facilities, civic infrastructure, and community gathering spaces. Aura has already seen the establishment of several localities, including Banya, Gagalba, and Nirimba. The addition of Aura Central is intended to provide a distinct identity for the development's commercial and administrative heart. The Caloundra South Priority Development Area was declared in 2010 to address population growth on the Sunshine Coast. Since its inception, the area has undergone a major transformation, delivering thousands of homes, schools, and parks. Community consultation on the proposed boundary change is now open and will continue until 26 June 2026. During this period, all interested stakeholders are encouraged to share their views. Following the close of the consultation period, all submissions will be reviewed by the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Minister for Manufacturing and Minister for Regional and Rural Development before a final decision is reached. Further details may be updated as more information becomes available.
Residents and businesses on the Sunshine Coast are being invited to provide feedback on a proposal to establish a new locality known as Aura Central, a move aimed at formally recognising the growing city centre within one of Australia’s largest masterplanned communities. The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development has opened public consultation on a proposed boundary amendment that would transfer approximately 90 hectares of land from the existing locality of Bells Creek into a newly created locality called Aura Central. The proposed change is located within the Caloundra South Priority Development Area, more commonly known as Aura. Developed as a long-term urban growth project, Aura has become one of the country's most significant masterplanned communities and is expected to accommodate around 50,000 residents upon completion. Government officials say the proposed boundary adjustment is about more than simply introducing a new name to the map. Accurate locality boundaries and addressing systems are considered essential for the effective operation of emergency services, postal deliveries, navigation systems and government administration. Police, ambulance, fire and emergency response agencies all rely on clear and accurate address information when responding to incidents. If approved, residents and businesses within the affected area would be required to update their official address details. Authorities have indicated that impacted property owners and occupants would receive direct notification explaining any changes and the steps required to update records. Consultation documents released by the department state that the proposal aims to formally identify and recognise the central business district emerging within the broader Aura development. The new locality would encompass the growing city-centre precinct, including several major projects currently under construction or in advanced planning stages. Among the most significant developments is the future Aura Town Centre, which is set to become a major retail and commercial hub for the region. The first stage of the project will span approximately 16,300 square metres and include major supermarkets, specialty retailers, dining options and commercial space designed to serve the expanding population. The proposed locality would also include the adjacent Aura Parklands precinct, a major public open space development covering more than five hectares. Plans for the wider city centre feature additional commercial buildings, educational facilities, civic infrastructure, hospitality venues and community gathering spaces. Aura continues to evolve rapidly, with several established localities already forming part of the masterplanned community. These include Banya, Gagalba and Nirimba. The introduction of Aura Central is intended to provide a distinct identity for the development's commercial and administrative heart. The Caloundra South Priority Development Area was originally declared in 2010 to accommodate population growth on the Sunshine Coast. Since then, the project has delivered thousands of homes, schools, parks and community facilities, transforming the area into one of Queensland’s fastest-growing residential regions. Community consultation on the proposal will remain open until 26 June 2026. During this period, residents, businesses and interested stakeholders are encouraged to submit their views on the proposed locality change. Following the consultation process, submissions will be reviewed by the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Minister for Manufacturing and Minister for Regional and Rural Development before a final decision is made. If approved, Aura Central would become the newest officially recognised locality on the Sunshine Coast, reflecting the continued growth and evolution of the region’s largest masterplanned community.
